Several weeks have passed since the Tunguksa portal appeared and Mental's forces have slowly taken control over Western Europe, and have already occupied France and Italy. The Earth Defense Force, Earth's main military force, is scrambled along with local resistance fighters to repel and contain the threat. The first of the portals to appear, a massive one in Tunguska, Russia, initiates the Tunguska Offensive. Serious Sam 1 and 2 is dead, long live the new Serious Sam.The Earth Defense Force convoy on their way to meet Father Mikhail.įollowing the events of Serious Sam 3: BFE, several alien portals suddenly appear on Earth, allowing Mental's alien armies to invade once more. While it could be better, I still think you’ll have a fun time playing it. Nevertheless, Serious Sam 4 is a decent shooter. Perhaps there was worry that it might not be an appealing game or perhaps this is part of an effort to pull in the new generation of players who love first-person shooters. However, I feel like the developers remade Serious Sam to appeal to a new generation of gamers. Sure, it might feel dated now that we’ve all moved on.īut if games like Doom - which technically has a similar concept - can become a mega-hit, Serious Sam can also be brought back to its glory days once more. Of course! Serious Sam is another entry in a long line of games that boosted the appeal of first-person shooters. I feel these small changes could revive this kind of shooters. Sometimes, all it takes is some basic finetuning to the character’s movement speed, air control, and changes to survival mechanics. The movement and strafing were also tighter you could quickly bob and weave your way through enemies and in games like this, movement mechanics can make or break it. Your screen is flashing red, and you have to get yourself together before the game takes away the ‘mercy’ factor from you. That was fantastic as it adds a layer of tension. I daresay 2016 Doom drew some inspiration from Serious Sam, but why did Doom do better?ĭoom incorporated an interesting mechanic where you take less damage when your life is low. People tend to compare Serious Sam to the modern-day Doom, and that makes a lot of sense. So how can the gameplay be fixed? The gameplay can work, but the direction must be different. Serious Sam in 2020 does feel dated, but the witty dialogue, over-the-top cutscenes, and entertaining enemies will never get old. But we think we like it because of the nostalgia factor, and I always believe that nostalgia is a dangerous thing. Simple gameplay, lack of mechanics, and repetitiveness all play a part in making it feel like it is dated. But let’s be frank, playing Left 4 Dead again might be fun for the first two games, but it’ll be left collecting dust in your games library. We all think that it would be fun to go back and play older games. It was not made for us, but I understand why they went down this path.

We needed something more grounded, and anything else would be an oddball game that got people asking “why was this made?”įor us who played the game back in the good ol’ days, Serious Sam 4 doesn’t feel like home.

Even if you’re running around with a shotgun in the early stages, you could easily wipe out the hordes of enemies and still keep a smile on your face.īut after the various iterations of Call of Duty, Battlefield, and all the other modern-day shooters, our tastes changed. When Serious Sam was released back in the 2000s, it was a wonderful and refreshing take on first-person shooters. One of the biggest turning point for First Person Shooters in the 2000s. Which then begs the question: do we need another Serious Sam game? The glory days are gone, and we have to accept that. To simplify it further, Serious Sam was a glorious mess that just works.īut the glory days are over for those of you who played the first and second games. In case some of you missed out on what I consider to be one of the best shooter games of the early 2000s, Serious Sam is a hectic shoot-em-up where you find yourself face-to-face against a horde of enemies.
